It's time to throw out those 'clean girl' mood boards. 2024 is here with its first fashion trend and it is sexier, fiercer and the antithesis of "quiet luxury" - the mob-wife aesthetic. This is just what Fashiongram needs after its "pish-posh, quiet, and clean" model.
So, what's the mob-wife aesthetic?
It's animal prints, striking accessories, iconic silhouettes, confidence, charisma and a luxurious faux fur coat that commands respect. The mob-wife is flashy, loaded, "I want, I got it" - she's the moment.
Pop Culture Connection
Unlike other trends, the mob-wife aesthetic is more than just a trendy lewk; it's a way of living. However, just like all other Instagram trends, this also draws from its own pop culture theory.
Think Karen Hill from Goodfellas. Think Carmela Soprano from The Sopranos. Think Connie Corleone from The Godfather Part II. Although these movies are male-dominated, this aesthetic shows women living life while men do the dirty work. The wife has her own opinions, and she doesn't like people wasting her time. She rocks fresh French tips with wine in her hand - and if some spill onto her coat, she says, 'Oh well.'
The colour palette for this aesthetic is monochrome dark tones like beige, black, and brown. It is all about chic and camp, from Chanel tweed skirts, and YSL coats to Daniel Roseberry’s Schiaparelli Haute Couture. Versace's Spring 1993 collection was the first to cater to this aesthetic.

In her signature style, Riri knows how to twist a classic silhouette. During the Dior Spring/Summer 2024 haute couture show, Wild Thoughts rocked the maison's signature look while adding a baseball cap to give it a tomboy vibe. She chose a nylon set, which included an oily moire-printed midi skirt and puffy jacket, which were cinched at the waist with black leather belts instead of a wool or cotton twill set. Cool mama!

Bollywood's IT girl, Sonam Kapoor, was spotted at ELLE List 2024 in a Rick Owens gown inspired by Saris. Going full goth mafia, she added a leather jacket and gloves. Queen moves only!

It's not the first time Mrs Bieber has nailed the Mob Wife aesthetic, but this one stands out the most. With ruched details along the sides and bustier, she picked a black YSL jersey mini dress. Wearing a jet-black faux-fur coat from the French fashion house and accessorising with strappy heels, rectangular sunglasses, and sheer tights - that's how the OG clean girl took on the loud mob-wife aesthetic!

There are stunning mob-life looks on Jeniffer Lopez's Instagram feed that you can pin to your mood board. She donned a fur illusion coat with 7,000 real rose petals styled with opaque black tights and heels, for Schiaparelli to kick off haute couture week. The white rose petals were kept alive by sugar water, or hummingbird nectar. Mother JLO!
