6 Reasons To Watch Netflix's Bulbbul, if you haven't!

Tripti Dimri, Avinash Tiwary, Rahul Bose, and Paoli Dam starrer Bulbbul released recently on Netflix. While, I am not a big fan of horror, but a little mystery is good. And, despite a predictable storyline, Anita Dutt's directorial debut ticks all the right boxes and had me completely hooked. But, I think story writing could have been more constructed!

Here's why you should definitely, watch this movie, if haven't till now!- *Spoilers Ahead*

1. A predictable but relevant storyline that take a long, hard look at the toxic masculinity.

Bulbbul vividly highlights how toxic masculinity does not manifest in violent gestures alone, as exhibited by the Thakur twins (Rahul Bose).

It's also in perceptions that drive men to believe they own the women in their lives, where they presume to know more about a woman's temperament and behavior than the woman herself!

Like Satya (Avinash Tiwary), who is convinced that Bulbbul has wronged her husband, or that woman can't be driven to the kind of murderous tendencies wreaking havoc in the town.

2. Tripti Dimri's amazing performance, also supported by the whole cast!

In just her second film, she has proven her acting prowess, which is on complete display as she convinces the audience that it's not the demons, but it is the society that is the true evil. Her beguiling innocence in the flashbacks that stand in complete contrast with her assured confidence, when she is ruling the haveli. And, she is flawless in both the scenarios!

And, you CAN'T ignore Rahul Bose's brilliant acting as well. Hating Rahul Bose comes naturally, which ultimately, is the true win for any actor playing a antagonist. Parambrata Chatterjee is one good character which will take a firm place in your heart, as the proverbial nice guy. And to be honest, I don't really like Avinash Tiwary's acting as memorable in comparison with all the other actors.

3. A hauntingly powerful background score.

I just love it! Amit Trivedi build a background score that is a perfect melancholic strain to accompany a woman's traumatic journey, where even empowerment comes at a painful cost! Take away the havelis and the abundant forests, and Bulbbul could be a story that would fit right in the 21st century. Well, that's the real tragedy!

4. The clever use of symbolism.

The cinematography remains painted in pink, hinting at the town literally painted red with blood. A young girl is told the toe ring she wears is a way to control her and to prevent her from flying too high. A girl viewed as a doll, quite literally, to be played with as a man deems fit. These are just a few instances of symbolism that allow even a predictable story to hook your attention. These small information will keep you hooked to the plot.

5. A horror film which steeps deep into the rich Bengali culture.

As Piku takes us into the intimate portrayal of the Bengal of today whereas, Bulbbul takes us into a rich household inside the ancient havelis with those lush hunting trips, paan boxes, and the tradition of years gone. However, I think mainstream horror movies have finally found their ways out from North India into a small town in Bengali culture, which reminds us of the diversity and variety of India's folklore!

6. A film that questions the patriarchial roles that women stifles into.

Bulbbul is a story of a young girl, married to a man twice her age, forced to grow up into a strange household, and then separated from the only companion she has ever known. Subjected to unspeakable torture, her very spirit breaks, until her anger and trauma lead to a rebirth, quite literally.

Apart from calling out the obvious evils of child marriage, domestic violence, etc., the movie also leave you pondering about the thought, that a woman can either be a demon or a devi anything but, a human in a patriarchal society. A woman has to be entrapped or empowered by the misfortunes she encounters but never given a chance to simply be.

Bulbbul may not be a flawless story. But, it's a highly relevant one. And that alone should be a reason enough to not miss this movie. Story is quite predictable, but will keep you engaged and most importantly what I love is the portrayal and background drop. I was a student of Film Studies for more than two years and somehow I feel that the way the story unfolds is fantastic even with loosely written script, which could have been more structured!

Kudos to Anushka Sharma for producing movies and web series that have a great script and are a real hit among the youth! Be it Paatal Lok or Bulbbul every movie or web series she is producing is turning out be really good and striking!
