Why afraid of the F-word?!

Why are some people, afraid or annoyed when they are asked if they are a 'feminist' or not? I have even heard some dumb people say that, 'I support equality of all genders', and then refrain from being called a feminist. This exactly means that, 'You love kheer', but you are a lactose intolerant ass! 

I won't call it hypocrisy, but a mixture of different type of misconception. About half of the Indian population doesn't know the real meaning of feminism. But, much interestingly, 80% of the citizens of India consider themselves as feminists, according to a survey that was conducted in 2019! 

Let's, just bust some of the myths concerned with 'feminism'!

First of all, we need to make it clear that, inspite of its ambiguous title, feminism is not at all about establishing superiority of any gender over some other! Its core concept is the advocacy of equality of all the sexual orientations present in the world, now be it- female, male, transgender, bisexuals or gay!

I AM A PROUD FEMINIST!

Some really mistaken believes and wrong concepts about feminism I get to hear, that needs to get busted at this very moment-

1. Its about Men vs. Women.

As I stated it above, feminism is not always about men and women. We feminists fight for everyone's freedom, be it any sex! Basically, If I talk about India, it is about All Genders vs. Patriarchy and some mohalle wali aunty's thinking. Mainstream thinking of the society needs to be changed, a boy can cry anytime he wants, a girl can wear whatever she deems fit for herself, a boy can love a boy and a girl can love a girl and most importantly, being a transgender is not abnormal!

2. Feminism is about making women more powerful than men!

This is same as, some people crying out 'ALL LIVES MATTER' before ensuring that, 'BLACK LIVES MATTER'!

We DON'T need power, we JUST need all genders to be equal!  Now, embracing the same thinking in Feminism, we are working towards the equality of women and men and not at all about establishing superiority of women over men! 

To achieve the status of equality, what we need to do is work on the status of the women to ensure equality, and someone being equal to you, makes you think that she is more powerful than you, well then...What can I say! 

3. Feminists are just angry women!

Some of us are angry. Many of us are women! But, these things DOESN'T define being a feminist or Feminism! 

Before, you make up your mind about a feminist or Feminism, learn to differentiate between a 'pseudo-feminist' and a 'staunch feminist'. Pseudo-Feminists are people who think that women deserve more respect than any other gender and that women should rule the world. Feminists will always see an individual as equal to any other gender and that too on humanitarian grounds!

For instance, if, you see a woman denying to leave a bus-seat for a 70-year old man, on grounds of being a girl, just there on that very spot, understand that she is a pseudo-feminist! Or for instance, you see a girl crib that, ALL MEN ARE TRASH!

4. Feminism makes men feel unwelcome!

Before, stating this, just do some research, ask some questions, observe the right feminist women! Trust me, no movement, will ever embrace you as wholeheartedly as Feminism ever will! 

We just can't hold orientation programs and offer you welcome drinks, if you think you are a man and a feminist!

 

5. Men and Women are already equal, Why do we need Feminism!?

No, I won't deny that we are not at all equal to men! But, I would like to say that we are half-way there, when the world will see a feminist society, where all genders, not only women, but all the genders are equal and prospering, and living in harmony. We have come a long way, we have a long way to go!

Lastly, as of India, matriarchy do exist in some parts of our country. But, we won't say that feminism prevails until a matriarchal society or a family headed by a woman is a taboo!

And, also until any gender, be it a transgender person, a bisexual person, a gay or a queer is not accepted by the society! We can't call it an Indian Feminist Society!

I know, it will take a lot of time, but we can try embracing it and calling out all the genders and individuals equal! Respect a person, if that person deserves it!
