Porn And Rape Culture.
With life becoming ever so stressful and lonely souls wandering the Earth, and a change in the trends and society, 2015 was awarded the 'Year of Porn' with 75GB of data being streamed per second, with India on the 3rd rank for the consumption of porn!
Let's talk about the present, Indians seem to be the leading the world in porn consumption, reporting 95% spike in traffic to adult sites during the lockdown!
The best is yet to come! Discussing sex is still considered a taboo in India, but ever since the COVID-19 induced lockdown was introduced, the sale for sex toys have soared up! Over the past few months, market has seen a spike of 65%. Mumbai remains on the top with the highest sale of sex products!
In the absence of sex education, it is porn where a huge chunk of teenagers are learning a lot about sex. First off, I want to emphasize that this is an issue that involves all genders. All men or women, girl or a boy can be porn consumers, and both genders can be victims of sexual violence.
Pornography can be extremely harmful! Masturbating and watching porn isn't wrong, but if it crosses a certain limit it can be really harmful for the physical and mental well-being of a person! When it harms your studies and your social or personal lives and schedule, you are crossing your limit.
Imitation of behaviors seen in pornography, comparing porn performers to women and sometimes even men, introduction of other sexual partners and filming sexual acts without consent, are some of the many consequences of watching porn repeatedly! Watching scene after scene of dehumanizing submission starts to make it look normal.
ITS NOT A SECRET!
Much of porn is violent. Porn is full of people, particularly women, being disrespected, coerced, and physically and verbally abused, and that's shaping how the youth thinks and acts.
Watching violent porn repeatedly and unlimited, can shape how we think. A recent study done, cited in NCOSE's report, says that women who were exposed to pornography as children were more likely to accept rape myths and to have sexual fantasies that involves rape!
Scientifically speaking, our brain have what scientists call 'mirror neurons'- brain cells that fire not only when we do things ourselves, but also when we watch other people do things which is why some people start crying upon seeing heartbreaking scene in a movie.
'Porn consumed to a limited extent is okay, but when someone crosses the limit, it can be really harmful.' We should also understand that violent porn should NOT be consumed completely. Sex life is nothing like what we see in porn!
However, this doesn't mean that all rapes are caused due to porn or all porn consumers are or can be rapists. But, Porn does influence, to a certain extent!
But, we do need to understand that you don't have control over somebody's body and vice versa. Consent is essential. 'No means No'. Submission, or keeping quiet is NOT consent. Most importantly, getting wet and having a orgasm doesn't mean that a girl/boy is enjoying it, it is purely a bodily reaction! You need to stop when he/she says 'No', which doesn't mean that you need to convince him/her into it repeatedly! Be it your girlfriend or boyfriend, your wife/husband or a stranger, a 'no means no'!
