Reason Explained: The Black and White Challenge
Over the past few days, you must have been witnessing women you follow on social media, are posting a black and white images of themselves, captioning it as- #challengeaccepted, or #womensupportingwomen.
As of today, there are more than 53,00,000 images on Instagram, with the caption, under the hashtag 'challenge accepted'. Women part of this challenge, post a image of themselves, with the same hashtags and are suppose to nominate other women as well!
Celebrities like, Anushka Sharma and politician like Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also participated in the challenge!
How did all this start?
Various news portals, state various reasons behind the black and white challenge. One being, the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's feminist speech on the House floor last week. Second, being the femicide in Turkey that is the reason for protests erupted all over the world!
This challenge started with a Twitterati from Turkey, in a campaign raising awareness about femicide in their country. The women in Turkey are getting frustrated over seeing a very new black and white photo a woman who have been murdered in the media every single day, by posting B&W pictures of them, it makes the point that, anyone of us could be the next one!
Some people in Turkey, confirmed it yesterday, saying that this challenge has started here itself. All this caught fire when it became Pinar Gultekin, yet another 27 year old woman living in Mugla, Turkey, who was murdered and left inside a oil drum to rot.
Initally, the social media campaign, started with posting a B&W photo of Pinar, and captioning it as 'Enough'.

Look, how beautiful she was! |
In 2019, 474 women were murdered in Turkey. Most of the women, were killed by the hands of someone they thought was a relative or a partner! The number has skyrocketed in 2020, due to the Coronavirus and the lockdown!
Just go through this website, it will give a chill down your spine- http://anitsayac.com/
Suprisingly, all the murderers are men who are either their rejected lovers or husbands, like in the case of Pinar, it was his ex-boyfriend who wanted to restart the relationship, which Pinar refused to and her subtle refusal resulted to her death!
The government there is least bothered about the whole situation, and is more interested in trying to ban social media, erase lgbtq+ representations on Netflix, cancelling any provision against child marriages and domestic violence, deeming them as legal and many more horrid legalisations. They are basically trying to take away all the powers from the hands of a woman and turning their society into a rigid patriarchy! And to commemorate the women, who were killed, they do something really demeaning and gut-wrenching!👇
Concluding the whole matter here, sisterhood is lovely and being inspired by women around us is a heartwarming sentiment. But, it is definitely, not one of the most pressing battle we ought to fight in such an easy way!
For we know that, one in every three women in the world have experienced a kind of sexual, physical or mental abuse!
One thing, I am proud of India, is our Gulabi Gang, in Uttar Pradesh, a vigilante group of women, fighting domestic violence!
